Hiya again Pete, my e mail address is   antar19@supanet.com I'm looking forward to seeing your photos.

I drove by the Worksop/Retford turnoff on the A1 the other day, and was telling wife Joan, how I used to feel as we turned back towards Ranby after being out on the road.  That sinking feeling of "back to the bullshit of guard duty/fire picket, parades etc, especially after Bill Brown took over as C/O.

Do you remember the annual vehicle inspection (C.I.V), when we spent, what seemed like weeks, getting the tractors and trailers ready for the inspection team.  Crawling about underneath them with an old pyrene extinguisher full of diesel, and a scraper/wire brush to get all the crap off the undersides! What a carry on that was, we all seemed to stink of diesel, no matter how many showers we had.

I'll never forget my first CIV. I'd not been at Ranby very long, and had been on leave. When I got back, I was signed on to a Dyson, previously signed to "Wor Lass" as Stan Cross got to be called. He was off on leave himself, but said the trailer was all done underneath, and only needed to be repainted ready for the inspection.

I did the painting, made sure the tensioners and shackles were all greased and working, and as the last job, the night before the trailer was due to be gone over, went to do the tyre pressures.

I was highly delighted to find that Stan had put the Dysons wheels back on with non of the wheels lined up correctly. You remember how the wheels were fitted in twos, with the inner wheel swan neck, lined with the cutout in the outer wheel so you could get the tyre inflater or pressure gauge on.

Out came the jacks and wheelbraces, and after a couple of hours, and a lot of help from some of the lads, Geordie Keogh and Jack Perret in particular, we had the wheels lined up correctly, and the pressures checked. Needless to say, Stan Cross came in for a right gobful when he got back to camp!

Happy days Pete!

Hiya Pete, nice to see another "old Ranbyite" on the site. Have you any photos to go with the names?

Barney.
